Teaching and learning

Qualified teachers and state-of-the-art facilities allow learnings to thrive in our purpose-built environment.

Each student has a learning pathway, tailored to them from the subjects on offer in Cambridge. Our Virtual Learning Environment and dedicated SEND provision create a well-rounded and adaptable educational setting.

A typical day at In Toto Cambridge

Each student has tailored timetable, including start and end times. The majority of our students travel to school by taxi and arrive for their first timetabled lesson of the day, when they are greeted by staff and sign in on our attendance tablet.

Before lessons begin, students have the opportunity to make use of common room facilities, where they can relax and make themselves a drink. Staff will collect them in time for their lesson, checking in on the student’s well-being and readiness for learning.

There are timetabled breaks throughout the day; a 15-minute break in the morning and a 30-minute lunch break at 13.00. Many of our post-16 students have permission to have unattended breaks or leave the college site, outside of lesson time. Our KS3 and KS4 students have supervised onsite morning and lunchtime breaks, where we have both outdoor and indoor space available for games and relaxing.

When a student’s learning day has finished, staff will inform them that their taxi/parent/carer has arrived, after which the student will sign out and leave for the day.

Wellbeing

At the heart of our approach is a deep commitment to supporting the overall well-being of each student. We understand that for many of our students, developing self-confidence, self-esteem, and healthy relationships can be just as important as academic progress. That's why our highly trained staff use specialised techniques like the Zones of Regulation to help students better understand and manage their emotions.

Our nurturing environment is designed to foster a strong sense of belonging and connection. Each student is assigned a key worker who serves as their primary point of contact, ensuring excellent communication between the school and the family.

The sensory room and other specialised spaces provide calming, enriching experiences that help students regulate their emotions and engage more fully in their learning. By empowering our pupils to take an active role in their own learning, we're able to build autonomy and a positive attitude towards education. Whether it's choosing their own learning pathway, participating in community-based activities, or simply voicing their needs, our students are encouraged to advocate for themselves and develop the skills they'll need to thrive in the world beyond our school.

Meet the In Toto Cambridge staff, and see who will be helping you achieve your personal best.
